In 1983, while living in Lima, Peru, I was strongly attracted to the pottery made by the different cultures: Mochicas, Chimus, Chancay, Inca, Tiawanaku, etc, and felt an urge to work with clay. It was not easy to find workshops, but once I touched clay there was no going back.
Upon my return to Melbourne, Australia, I continued learning as much as possible and the early 1990’s were spent in several Community Colleges, TAFE Colleges and finally graduating with a B.A.Honours in Ceramic Design from Monash University. My last year at Monash, was spent researching for several months for a glaze that would suit the body of work I was developing, with a strong archeological feeling, weathered like old rock faces. Once I found the right combinations, these glazes have become my trademark.
My inspirations come from the depths of my memories and events that surrounded my childhood in a mining city in Bolivia.
I’m privileged to work in a clay studio everyday,
to share my knowledge with other interested adults and children. This is my life. Clay is my love. This is my gift to the world.
