Luis personally searches for and dyes his own wild straw using insect, vegetable and chemical dyes. Over the design he places a sheet of vellum paper, a buttery smooth paper coated with beeswax that adheres to the straw. Each piece of straw must be carefully laid in place then cut off in appropriate lengths with a small spatula. Luis is a Fifth Generation master of straw mosaics in America.
